Kublai Mongolian BBQ
Our first stop on our food marathon tonight was Kublai Mongolian BBQ in Leederville. A step back to the nineties decor-wise, but a really interesting meal none-the-less.
You fill your bowl with as much frozen meats and veggies as you like, before having it stir-fried for you on the MASSIVE hotplate by the chefs. Take the challenge to fill your bowl seriously, remembering it will shrink significantly during cooking.
We were talking to a regular visitor to Kublai and she advised the best course of action to be lining the sides of the bowl with the meat, reinforcing the bowl shape to contain the vegetables (rather than having them slide off the top).

You can chose from (or combine) Beef, Pork, Lamb and Chicken, which is all sliced very thinly and frozen (part of the way traditionally the Mongolian warriors used to transport their meat in the freezy conditions). Heap on a selection of basic stirfry greens (cabbage, celery, spring onion, carrot, bean sprouts, onion), and dress with a whole range of sauces (go to town on these, they make the dish so much better!).
We shared one small and one large rice between 5 of us to go along with our Mongolian BBQ’s as well as a few pots of Chiese tea to quench our thirst.
Quick and tasty meal, once you get a hang of the balance of ingredients, but I don’t think Kublai is really living up to its potential. Some simple changes (expansion of the veggies in the buffet, revamp of the interior etc.) could take this restaurant to the next level.
The Good: Choose your own adventure dining
The Bad: Minimal decor - this is not an “impress people” restaurant, but it could be with a little more effort I think.
The Money: $15pp for the stir-fry, so pretty reasonable.
